EUR 1.7 bln from the EU for the Danube-Bucharest Canal

The Danube-Bucharest Canal, a 149 years old idea, will be finalised with European money. The project now enjoys the support of Brussels and will receive financial support from the EU worth EUR 1.7 bln, libertatea.ro reports. The experts of the European Commission say that the EU will not invest only in this canal, which will turn Bucharest into the fifth European capital on the Danube, alongside Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade, as well as deepening the river bed, also on Romanian soil, so that big tonnage ships can sail all year long between Constanta and Rotterdam, i.e. to go from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea going in a straight line, sailing the two European rivers. In this context, Relu Fenechiu, the minister of Transport said that the financing is secured for buying an icebreaker that will allow ships sail the river during cold waves. We mention that the Danube is connected to the Rhine through the Main Canal, since 1992. The value of works was estimated by Anca Boagiu, former minister of Transport, at EUR 2.5 bln.
