Baia Mare mayor, under criminal probe for bribe taking and influence peddling

The National Anticorruption Directorate announced yesterday that the mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Chereches, is targeted by a criminal probe for bribe taking and influence peddling, both in continued form, and for making financial operations, such as acts of commerce incompatible with his position. According to prosecutors during 2011-2013 Catalin Chereches received money “as undue benefits” from the representatives of five companies, in order to favour these firms in the public acquisition procedures organised by the Municipality of Baia Mare, during the awarding and unfolding of these contracts. Chereches was ordered to come for questioning and to be informed about the accusations. According to DNA sources quoted by Mediafax, DNA Cluj searched Tuesday the head offices of the Baia Mare Municipality, the home of Catalin Chereches and several companies including the press group e-Maramures.
