Main political target – consolidating relations with the US

During the talks yesterday between the Romanian president and CIA Director, John O. Brennan said that SIE and SRI are remarkable.

President Traian Basescu received yesterday, at the Presidential Palace, CIA director John O. Brennan, to whom he confessed that Romania’s main political target is the consolidation of relations with the US.
“It is our main political target to consolidate the relations with the US even if, as was the case with Kosovo, we do not necessarily have the same point of view, but this cannot put in doubt our determination to consolidate the relation with the US,” said President Basescu at the beginning of the meeting with the CIA director.
He also expressed his appreciation for the growth and stimulation of US investments in Romania after the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership for the 21st Century was signed in 2011.
In his turn, Brennan said that he had not been for a long time in Bucharest, but that he has been aware of the growth and development of the city.
The CIA director also voiced appreciation for the growth of the relation with the intelligence services in Romania and revealed the Romanian officers’ professionalism, innovation, integrity and courage.
Thus, during his meeting with President Basescu the CIA Director stated that the Romanian intelligence services – SIE and SRI – are “truly remarkable” and are appreciated in the United States.
The CIA official pointed out that he previously visited Bucharest 13-14 years ago back when the partnership between the intelligence services of the two countries which are now NATO allies was barely starting.
“Compared to my previous visit, back when we were at the beginning, I notice the joint effort, the Romanian intelligence officers’ professionalism, ability, determination, motivation, integrity and courage. Both SIE and SRI truly are remarkable and we appreciate this,” Brennan stated at the start of the official visit at the Presidential Palace.
CIA Director John. O. Brennan met President Traian Basescu yesterday. SRI Director George Maior, SIE Director Teodor Melescanu and US Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires Duane Butcher also took part in the meeting.
Prior to that, he also met, at the Victoria Palace, Prime Minister Victor Ponta, with whom he discussed cooperation between the two countries under the Romania – US strategic partnership.
The US official’s visit to Romania comes one day after the Secretary of the Russian Federation’s Security Council Nikolai Petrushev and PM Ponta discussed in Bucharest energy and trade.
