Serbia fittingly belongs in the European Union, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said Wednesday, one day after the European Union ministers unanimously recommended the opening of negotiations for the EU accession of the former Yugoslav state, Agerpres informs. ‘I was very pleased to see that the proposal was referred to the European Council for the opening of negotiations on Serbia’s EU membership. Serbia is our best neighbor and friend and I am convinced that it belongs in the EU. I want Romania to never again be an obstacle to Serbia’s EU accession process, but quite the opposite, act as its best ally and friend, also with a view to settling the situation in Kosovo and all the other issues still pending,’ the Premier said at the beginning of the Government meeting. The EU on Tuesday recommended that Serbia begin EU membership negotiations by the very latest in January 2014. This decision became possible following the conclusion on April 19 of a historic agreement between Serbia and Kosovo to normalize their ties, announced European Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Füle.
