Convictions in Giulesti maternity hospital burned babies case

Nearly three years since the tragedy at the Giulesti maternity hospital, the District 6 Court ruled that the maternity shall pay a criminal fine of RON 80,000 for the manslaughter of each of the babies involved. Also, medical assistant Florentina Daniela Carstea was sentenced to 2 years and 2 months in prison. Six newly born lost their lives in the fire, while five more sustained severe injuries that required several weeks of treatment. Also, the hospital manager was given a RON 6,500 fine. Prosecutors with the Prosecutor general’s Office put on trial five employees at the hospital – assistant Florentina Carstea, the head of the technical department, Vasile Dima, the former hospital manager, Dr. Bogdan Marinescu, the head of the Neonatology Department, Dr. Ioan Toma Adrian, and the hospital’s electrician, Gigel Oprea.
