The man who tried to detonate a bomb in one of the classrooms at the Faculty of Electronics in Iasi has been taken into custody Monday night under the suspicion of terrorism. Prosecutors must decide whether he will be held in remand custody or committed to the Socola Hospital. According to Mediafax, Iulia Diaconu, the chief prosecutor of DIICOT Iasi, stated on Tuesday that Oliver Stan Florin, aged 38, was taken into custody after the hearings and investigators would decide on the same day whether to ask the court to issue an arrest warrant for 29 days.  “He is being charged with terrorism. He has been taken into custody and is currently being held at the police station in Iasi. Tuesday it will be decided if the defendant should be taken in remand custody or be committed to the Socola Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation,” Iulia Diaconu said.
Additionally, a foundation from The Republic of Moldavia will offer Moldavian student Marian Platonov a prize of approximately EUR 1,800 for helping to restrain the bomber together with another fellow student.
Prime Minister Victor Ponta issued a statement yesterday, saying that the attempt to detonate a bomb in a classroom at the Faculty of Electronics in Iasi could have been the biggest catastrophe in Romanian history, had the bomb exploded. He said he thanks God the attempt failed. On Monday morning, around 9.30, Stan walked in one of the classrooms of the Electronics and Telecommunications Faculty of the Technical University in Iasi, located in Building A of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, where four professors and 40 fourth-year students were holding the final Bachelor exam. Stan, who carried a backpack, started screaming he would detonate a bomb and asked to speak to the Police.
The Faculty Dean, Bogdan Ion, who was also in the room, stated that he talked to the Stan and tried to convince him not to follow through with the threat. He offered to be his hostage and let everyone else go, but the man replied he didn’t want to talk to him, but the Police.
