French company Thales will provide, under a contract worth EUR 60 M, the high-power laser system in the project developed on European funding at Magurele, the contract being signed Thursday in Bucharest, in the presence of Romanian and French Prime ministers Victor Ponta and Jean-Marc Ayrault, Mediafax reports. The contract was signed by the director of the ‘Horia Hulubei’ National Institute of Research-Development for Nuclear Physics and Engineering and the president of Thales Optronique SAS, Gil Michielin. According to the French company, this is the biggest contract ever awarded to an industry by a national research institute, as part of a project with European financing. The total value of the Magurele project amounts to EUR 293 M.Moreover, the directors of the national agencies for radioactive waste of the two countries signed a cooperation accord. Three weeks ago, the delegate minister for Research Mihnea Costoiu announced that the French minister of Education will come to Romania in September, as he is interested to consolidate the strategic partnership between the two countries and by the project of the Magurele laser.
