The theme of the twenty-first edition of the festival is “Vlad the Righteous Knight”.
The twenty-first edition of the Medieval Sighisoara Festival, which will take place on July 26-28, organized by the Municipality and Sighisoara Tourist Association, will have as the theme ‘Vlad the Righteous Knight’, subtitled ‘Between myth and history, from the symbol of Vlad the Righteous Knight to that of Dracula, an inappeasable spirit’.
‘This year we wanted to meet the public passionate over the Middle Ages with a theme based on a Romanian hero and who else other than Vlad the Impaler (the ruler of Wallachia in the years 1448, 1456-1462 and 1476), a name that is related by the birth to Sighisoara Citadel (center). As well, we thought as beneficial to draw a parallel between the real Vlad the Impaler and the Dracula fiction – a story that brought to Sighisoara a real boom in terms of tourism. (…) This theme was chosen as a natural consequence of the three past editions,’ stressed Sorin Ratiu, President of Sighisoara Tourist Association, in a press release.
In turn, the artistic director of the 21st edition of the Medieval Sighisoara Festival, Liviu Pancu, underlined that the festival is not intended to serve as a historical reconstruction, but rather as a ‘floating’ of the soul elements felt by Vlad, son of a father belonging to the Order of the Dragon, and who was trained in the Ottoman Empire, things that determined him, when at home, to wish justice and prosperity for his nation. We’ll sum up all the ‘energy’ of elements that led him to be ‘the Righteous Knight,’ said Liviu Pancu, artistic director of the Medieval Sighisoara Festival.
The twenty-first edition of Sighisoara Medieval Festival will begin with the Grand parade of the knights, troubadours, minstrels, actors and artisans.
At the edition this year such medieval music formations announced their participation as: Ad Hoc, Lupus Dacus, Truverii, Nomen Est Omen, CVA Domini, Terra Alba – all from Romania – and the Ambient Folklore from Bulgaria, along with the Order of the Knights in Medias, the Wolf Knights Order, the Tambour boy and Sighisoara Fortress Guard, the Crux Alba Knights Order (Hungary), the Order of Chigot Knights (Bulgaria).
In the festival framework, SCENA Theater in collaboration with the National Theatre Targu Mures, the University of Theatre Arts in Targu Mures, the National University of Theatre Arts and Cinematography in Bucharest will stage ‘Vlad the Righteous Knight’ super-production.
