Romania will be hosting the year 2018 edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad, for the sixth time, Romania’s Education Ministry (MEN) reports. ‘ This will be for the 6th time that Romania will organize the Olympiad, after 1959 in Brasov; 1960 in Sinaia, as well as 1969, 1978 and 1999, all three in Bucharest,’ MEN reports in a press release issued on Monday. Romania played host to the first edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad, in 1959. Among the founding members of the competition were also Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the former German Democratic Republic, Hungary and the former USS. The release says Romania and Bulgaria are holding the presence record, 54, having in fact attended all the editions of the contest. Romania’s medal tally is 269 – 73 gold medals, 124 silver medals, 96 bronze medals and 3 citations). At this year’s edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad hosted by Colombia, July 18-27, the Romanian students won three silver and three bronze medals.
