At the Jilava Penitentiary an internal inquiry began, after the businessman Gigi Becali, who is serving a three and a half years sentence there, received in the exchange of land parcels with the Ministry of Defense (MApN) case, announced he had found 1,000 Euros in the pocket of a pair of trousers, money he gave to the supervisor officer. Following the referral, a report of the event was made and inside the Jilava Penitentiary an internal inquiry was initiated, to determine how the money got to Becali’s pocket. The spokesperson for the National Penitentiary Administration, Monica Pana, declared, for Mediafax, that on August 1, “a person deprived of liberty, in the custody of the Jilava Penitentiary, announced that he found in a pocket two banknotes, that he then gave to the supervising officer”. “I have no idea how they got there”, the businessman said. The scandal that involves now the landowner in Pipera could have repercussions for him. The heads of the Jilava Penitentiary could change his detention regime from open to semi-open, could reduce the number of visits he gets and the number of packages he receives, as well as ask for the delaying of parole and forfeit his rights to employment and participation in educational activities. Gigi Becali’s lawyer, Paula Iacob, said yesterday that, in her opinion, this is a setup. “I took him one day a piece of cheesecake and he did not want to take it, saying he didn’t want to break the rules. It is all just an attempt to make Gigi Becali, even if in prison, the offender of the century”, Paula Iacob said.
