Romania recorded, in the first four months of this year, a trade balance deficit of 224.6 million euros in respects of vegetables and fruits, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Thus, in January-April 2013, FOB exports of vegetables and fruits amounted to 35.4 million euros, increasing by 13.4 percent compared to the same period last year. As concerns the CIF imports of those products, their value was 260 million euros, increasing by 52 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to INS, the consumption of vegetables and canned vegetables in equivalent of fresh vegetables was, in the first quarter, per household and on monthly average, of 6.4 kg / person, and in terms of residence the average stood at 6.4 kg / person in urban areas and 6.5 kg / person in rural areas.
As concerns the potatoes per all households in the first quarter of 2013, the average monthly consumption per person was 3.5 kg / person and as regards the households of farmers, retirees and those in rural areas exceeded this level. In terms of residence, the average monthly per capita consumption was 3.4 kg / person in urban areas and 3.6 kg / person in rural areas. By region, the highest potato consumption was recorded in the North East (4.2 kg / person), and the lowest in the South-West Oltenia and Bucharest-Ilfov (2.9 kg / person) regions.
