Supreme Court Judge questioned as witness in the case of Veronica Cirstoiu

Judge Sofica Dumitrascu, from the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court), was questioned yesterday, at the headquarters of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), as a witness in the case in which Veronica Cirstoiu, from the Bucharest Court of Appeal, is accused of complicity in influence peddling and taking bribes to offer favorable solutions to certain cases. When she came out after questioning, Sofica Dumitrascu said she could have never jeopardized the reputation of the High Court of Cassation and Justice and the safety of her child, stressing that she did not know lawyer Adriana Dascalu , who had used her name. “My name was used by that lawyer, whom I have never seen in my life. She simply used my name,” the judge said. Asked about her relationship to judge Verionica Cirstoiu, Sofica Dumitrascu said they were just colleagues and she refused to comment upon the charges brought against her by the anticorruption prosecutors. Asked about the resolution in the Omar Hayssam case, by which he was set free years ago, Dumitrascu said: “Omar Hayssam is a closed case for me, I gave a resolution in that case. What else can I say about Omar Hayssam?”
We remind you that, in April 2006, Sofica Dumitrascu, at the time a magistrate at the Bucharest Court of Appeal, ruled that Omar Hayssam was to be freed on medical grounds and await trial. The Syrian left Romania shortly after. Omar Hayssam was sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the kidnapping of the journalists Marie Jeanne Ion, Sorin Miscoci and Ovidiu Ohanesian and he was brought back to Romania to serve his sentence seven years after his escape. Judge Veronica Cirstoiu and her son, Florin Cergan, were preventively arrested on August 9, by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, in the case in which they are accused of complicity to influence peddling and taking bribery to offer favorable solutions in certain cases, among which that of Dinel Staicu.
