Bucharest begins dialogue with Kiew on recouping investment of Krivoi Rog

The Economy Ministry began the discussions with the Ukrainian side for the first time in the past two decades on recouping the expenses Romania made for the project of the Mining and Processing Works of Oxidized Ore Plant of Krivoi Rog, informs a ministry release. Romania has to recoup approximately one billion dollars from this project.
Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian on Tuesday paid a visit to Kiev for discussions on this topic with the Ukrainian partners. The reopening of the negotiations with the Ukrainian side for recouping the expenses Romania made for this project was decided by the Government in mid-June, this being the first time after 1994 when the discussions are resumed on this level. ‘The Romanian delegation presented the dialogue partners Romania’s position, which the Government of Bucharest adopted in a Memorandum requesting them to voice a clear point of view on Ukraine’s stand concerning Krivoi Rog plant within the Joint Committee meeting taking place in Bucharest this autumn. At the same time, the Romanian delegation conveyed the Ukrainian side the need to draw up an interstate document meant to regulate aspects of the collaboration for building the plant and leading to the confirmation of the problem conclusion,’ the release shows.
Moreover, it was agreed that, until the meeting of the Romanian-Ukrainian intergovernmental joint committee for economic collaboration, which will take place in Bucharest this autumn, experts should analyse in detail mutually acceptable options in the Kirvoi Rog Plant issue. ‘The discussions held in Kiev were written down in the discussion minute, a document signed at the end of the meeting by the two delegation chiefs, Minister Varujan Vosganian and Minister Kalenkov Alexandr Fedorovich. It is worth mentioning that the signing of such document on a minister level takes place for the first time in the past two decades,’ the release also shows.
