President Traian Basescu’s youngest daughter and Democratic Liberal MEP Elena Basescu gave birth to a healthy baby girl Saturday night.
The baby weighing 2,715 grams and measuring 47 centimeters was born by C-section at the Capital’s Emergency University Hospital, at 3:30 a.m., the hospital spokesman Dr. Leonard Grecescu said. Both mother and baby are doing well, he added.
Elena Basescu was admitted to hospital on August 31. She was 35 weeks into pregnancy.
The first child of Elena Basescu and, at the same time, the first grandchild of President Basescu, was born the day her mother celebrates one year of marriage. Elena Basescu and Bogdan Ionescu were married in September 2012, a few days after President Basescu returned to the Cotroceni Palace, after his two months suspension last summer.
Yesterday, the President visited his granddaughter in the hospital and, when he came out of the hospital, he said that he was glad to have received “the noble title of a grandfather”. He added, laughing that his granddaughter looks like him. Basescu explained that the child came early, as she was expected in three weeks from now, but the doctors decided that it was better to make the C-section now. As for the name of the little one, the President said that the parents would be the ones to choose the name, but several TV channels have already revealed that the chosen name is Sofia Raisa.
