Nicolaescu: As of 2014, patients will choose their own medicine

Tuesday, Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu discussed the health reform in Craiova. The participants who attended the meeting said they were sick of promises and asked the MP to come up with solutions. The Health Minister stated the framework contract will include a new regulation as of 2014, allowing patients to choose their own generic drug after being informed on the choices by their physician.
According to Nicolaescu, physicians will be obliged to inform their patients on the most suitable drugs depending on the diagnosis. “As of 2014, we will introduce a regulation in the framework contract. This item of news may be new to you, but it will soon become public knowledge: the agreement concluded with the International Monetary Fund includes a provision with respect to the Ministry of Health, by which physicians are obliged to inform their patients on the most suitable drugs, from generic drugs to original drugs, and the patients will have to choose”, Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu said.
The Health Minister’s statement was in response to a question asked by a diabetes association representative during the regional debate for Oltenia, organised by the competent ministry on the topic of bill drafts on system reforms.
