So far our country tops the sales of wheat to Egypt in fiscal year 2013-2014, according to an analysis conducted by ‘Bursa’ daily. GASC, the Egyptian authority authorized to purchase wheat, has bought 1,910,000 tons of wheat this season, namely 780,000 tons from Romania, 590,000 tons from Ukraine and 540,000 tons from Russia. The fact that Romanian traders have so far sold the highest quantity is explained through the fierce competition between the three large grain-producing countries located in the Black Sea basin. “Thus, grain traders have to sell more grain faster, because our crops are considerably smaller than those in Russia and Ukraine, the main competitors. This means that we won’t maintain this position in the following period,” the analysis points out. During the most recent tender – tender number 8 – GASC bought 60,000 tons of wheat from Romania at a price of USD 252 per ton, and two cargos of 60,000 tons each from Russia, one from Glencore and one from Olam, at a price of USD 251.8 per ton. The wheat has to be shipped on October 21-31. The company that won the tender for the Romanian wheat is called, according to the website, El-alamia, while in all international news on this issue the company is called Al-Almiya.
