Artmark auctions volume of poems dedicated to Ceausescu

The volume of manuscript poems is unique and includes a portrait of the dictator.

“Floarea darurilor” (Gifts’ flower), a volume of manuscript poems dedicated to Nicolae Ceausescu by 262 poets that includes a portrait of the dictator made by Corneliu Baba will be auctioned on 21 September in Bucharest by Artmark at the starting price of EUR 29,000.
According to Artmark auction house, the unique volume entitled “Floarea darurilor” will be auctioned at the Memorabilia – Muzica si Poezie (Memorabilia – Music and Poetry) auction scheduled to take place Saturday, September 21 from 11.30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Athenee Palace Hilton in Bucharest.
The Memorabilia – Muzica si Poezie auction from 21 September and the George Macovescu Collection auction from 22 September (taking place from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at Athenee Palace Hilton in Bucharest) will open “the series of remarkable events of the Romanian art market in the new season,” Artmark noted.
The two auctions, which Artmark has described as “a journey from Enescu to Iris, from Eminescu to Dinescu, from Tonitza to Caltia,” entail over 250 plastic arts lots and very rare collectible items, most of which were owned by writer and politician George Macovescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs during Gheorghe Maurer and Manea Manescu governments (1972-1978) and chairman of the Writers’ Union (1978-1982).
According to Artmark, the items being auctioned on September 21-22 are collectibles with museum potential, labelled as “absolute curios”.
These unique items include “Floarea darurilor”, a volume of manuscript poems, edited in a single copy by the Writers’ Union of Romania and offered to Nicolae Ceausescu in 1974 as a present for being appointed President of the Socialist Republic of Romania. The auction’s starting price for the volume is EUR 29,000.
The volume was put together by the Writers’ Union led by Zaharia Stancu and offered to Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu to celebrate the day of 23 August in 1974. The covers are made of cardboard covered with blue leather and there is a chromed, coated plate made of acid attacked brass recessed on each side. These plates are designed as 12 images in series of six, one for each month of the year. The images depict everyday life scenes from the life of the citizens led by the Communist Party. All the pages are made of luxury paper and the dedications are written by the authors of the poems and autographed.
Artmark explained that 262 Romanian, Hungarian, German and Jewish poets responded to a Union initiative and it is interesting that the volume’s contents includes both court writers, known for their passionate cultivation of the dictator’s personality, and men of letters who were less committed to the Communist regime.
The document is “a testimony of the history of compromise”, Artmark added, and “what is unique and interesting about this volume is the exceptional plastic element”: Nicolae Ceausescu’s front-page portrait was drawn using a mixed technique (ceracolour, coal and sepia) by Corneliu Baba, who would become known for artistic dissidence.
