Peter Brook’s “The Suit”, a premiere in Romania

The show “The Suit”, one of the most acclaimed performances of the famous British director Peter Brook, will be premiered on September 22 and 23 at the National Opera in Bucharest, according to a press release sent to our editorial team. The two event performances are presented as a preview for the “Life is Beautiful!” International Musical Performing Arts Festival, an event organized by the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta Theatre. As a partner for the event, the National Opera will host the two shows, beginning at 7 p.m.
The musical show “The Suit” is a production of the Bouffes du Nord Theatre in Paris, directed, adaptation and music by Peter Brooks, Marie-Helene Estienne and Frank Krawczyk. Adapted from the same title short story by Can Themba, a black South-African writer, the show “The Suit” (“Costumul”), initially played in French, returned in a new version, in the original language, English, at the Bouffes du Nord Theatre, the Parisian theatre made famous by Peter Brook, who has managed it for over 30 years.
The new version includes the jazz music of the time, performed live by a four actors’ band together with a small orchestra. The show the Romanian public will see is therefore part of the fall repertory of the 2013-2014 season of the French theatre. It had very good reviews in the trade press and it was described as “a reminder of lost affection”.
The tickets for the two shows can be bought from the Eventim network, from the partner stores (the complete list can be found on www.eventim.ro) and from the box office of the National Opera in Bucharest.
Influenced by Antonin Artaud and the Theatre of Cruelty, but using, at the same time, techniques specific for the experimental theatre, director Peter Brook is famous for his shows which communicate in a special theatrical language – interdisciplinary and intercultural. In 1970, Peter Brook founded the International Centre for Theatre Research that became, in 1974, the International Centre for Theatre Creation, a theatre company whose artists, coming from various countries, want to go beyond the imposed limits and the national languages through theatrical creation.
One of the major musical events of the year, “Life is Beautiful!” International Musical Performing Arts Festival, that will take part November 7 to 17, 2013, will reunite a series of shows, concerts, galas and highly prestigious related activities (book launchings, traditional music evenings, workshops), continuing the tradition started in November 2008, in the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta Theatre, with the launch of the concept and the first edition of the Festival.
