French Interior Minister is “more than reserved” on Romania, Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen

The French Minister of Internal Affairs stated Thursday for France Inter radio station that opening the Schengen area to Romania and Bulgaria “is not on the agenda” and he was “more than reserved” regarding this possibility. Asked about the statement made by the National Front Chairwoman saying Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area has already been made, Manuel Valls replied: “Marine Le Pen is incompetent”.
“At the moment, no decision has been made regarding Romania and Bulgaria acceding to the Schengen area and, as Minister of Internal Affairs and participant in the Council of EU Internal Affairs Ministers, I am obviously more than reserved about opening these borders, as long as Romania and Bulgaria do not make certain efforts”, he said.
“This matter is not on the agenda and I want to be very clear about this. It will not happen on January 1, not before measures are taken to ensure the other countries and citizens’ security”, Valls explained.
PSD spokesman Catalin Ivan stated Thursday that the French Minister of Internal Affairs’ statements on Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area are “political”, although the topic is technical, and France will be “in favor rather against” the accession.
