Bayard d’Or for Child’s Pose by Calin Peter Netzer

Luminita Gheorghiu, the leading actress in Netzer’s film, received the Best Actress award. This is the second consecutive year when a Romanian film obtains a grand prix at the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film.

The 28th edition of the International Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film was held, as usually, between September 27 and October 4, 2013 at Namur, Belgium. It featured about 150 productions, in presence of 500 guests and 380 journalists. This year, too, the Romanian cinematography had a substantial presence, with two movies in the contest for the Bayard awards (Child’s Pose by Calin Petre Netzer and Domestic by Adrian Sitaru). The festival also has a section for debutant movies, which includes Lupu (Wolf), directed by Bogdan Mustata. Worth mentioning are also the Romanian short films, planned to run as parallel projections in the contest.
In an event organised Friday evening at the Royal Theatre of Namur, the jury led by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki announced the awards. The first place is occupied by the Romanina film Child’s Pose by Calin Peter Netzer , with two important awards: Best Film and Best Actress. The latter went to Luminita Gheorghiu. Both awards were handed to producer Ada Solomon, who attended the ceremony.
The prize mainly consists into a sum of money meant to support the distribution of the film on TV, in Belgian cinemas and in other French-speaking territories. The new success – film, directing and actors – comes to confirm the value of directors, actors and producers belonging to the Romanian young generation, who thus gain new international prestige and recognition. Actually, the Namur festival awarded other Romanian movies as well, signed by directors belonging to various generations: Dan Pita, Nae Caranfil, Cristi Puiu, Radu Muntean, Radu Jude.
The Belgian press emphasised the artistic value of the film and the excellent acting of Luminita Gheorghiu, now impersonating a mother.
“Child’s Pose”, directed by Calin Peter Netzer, received the Golden Bear award at the Berlin Festival this year and was designated to represent Romania in next year’s Academy Awards, in the ‘Best Foreign Movie’ category. It is the third film by Calin Peter Netzer, after the award-winning ‘Maria’ (2003) and ‘Medal of Honor’ (2010). It tells the dramatic and moving – yet not deprived of some humour – story of the scars left by suffocating children with love and the parents’ influence on their personality. The film also portrays an accurate image of the contemporary Romanian high-class and speaks of influence and petty corruption in the basic institutions of the society and their extensions throughout the entire socio-economic system of today’s Romania. Last year, the feature film ‘Everybody in our family’ by Radu Jude was designated as winner of the 27th edition of the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film, where it received the Bayard d’Or for the Best French-Speaking Film and for the Best Actor (Serban Pavlu).
