The 12th of October, a Special Day for a strategic partner

by H.E. Mr. Titus Corlatean, Minister of Foreign Affairs
On the auspicious occasion of the National Day of the Kingdom of Spain, I would like to convey to the Government and people of Spain our sincere and cordial congratulations, as well as our best wishes for success and prosperity.
Romania and Spain enjoy a special relation, strengthened by a remarkable multilevel cooperation and based on a tight economic cooperation and a close political dialogue – two EU member states that share a common vision about a more cohesive and integrated Union.
The recent official visit to Madrid of the Romanian Prime-minister, Mr. Victor Ponta, on July 22, was an excellent opportunity to discuss new ways of expanding and deepening the substantial political and economic cooperation between our countries as strategic partners. Therefore we are currently looking into ways of expanding and deepening our relations not only at political and governmental level, but also paying special attention to the cooperation in areas such as economy and business, justice and home affairs, agriculture, academia and civil society. We are working together in order to prepare our first intergovernmental meeting in 2014.
The Romanian government highly values the quality of Spanish investments in Romania in sectors such as transportation, environment and renewable energies where Spanish companies enjoy worldwide reputation. We want a Spanish investment presence in Romania as broad, diversified and long-term orientated as possible. At the same time, we encourage Spanish companies and entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities offered by the Romanian domestic market. Extremely positive results in this respect can already be perceived: in 2011 only, Spanish companies won a record 700 million euro in public tenders in Romania. Recent trade developments also confirm a constantly growing economic relationship – our bilateral trade registered a historic high of EUR 2.41 bn. in 2012.
I would also like to mention the important contribution of the cultural relations to the development of our bilateral relation, and express my gratitude to the Spanish authorities and its people for openness to the integration of the Romanian community in the Spanish society. The Romanian community in Spain contributes to the prosperity of Spain, representing one of the main pillars of our bilateral relation.
Romania and Spain are strong partners in the EU. We both support a more competitive Union able to keep pace with the emerging economies in an increasingly globalized world. We share the objective of deepening and extending the Single Market, as well as the four fundamental freedoms, including the free movement of European citizens.
Our cooperation stems from a deep conviction that the unity and the cohesion of the EU are the proper answer to the current economic crisis. Since the beginning of this crisis, the European agenda has been focused on developing and implementing EU anti-crisis and growth measures. In this context, both countries have constantly supported and promoted the measures aimed at economic consolidation and jobs creation. We believe that the tourism sector can and should play an essential role in the post crisis recovery in terms of jobs, infrastructure, trade and development.
Romania and Spain are committed to extending the advantages and benefits of the EU beyond its own borders, to its neighbors. For this reason we strongly support the continuation of the EU enlargement policy, based on the compliance with the accession criteria and with the European values and principles. We also reiterate our common interest in a prosperous, stable and secure European Neighborhood, both on the Eastern and Southern dimensions.
The Romanian-Spanish cooperation extends well beyond the EU, as we closely work together within NATO and other multilateral formats.
I am convinced that our compatibility of positions in multiple European issues and interests on international dossiers as well as the friendship between our people are essential topic to amplify our strong relation.
Romania shares the joy of the celebration of the historic day of October 12, 2013, and wishes all the Spanish people a happy National Day!
