16 people injured in rail accident in Bistrita-Nasaud



Sixteen people were injured yesterday morning in an accident that occurred at the entrance in a tunnel in the county Bistrita-Nasaud, after a freight train collided with a railcar. According to the representatives of the Bistrita Nasaud Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU), eight victims were taken to the hospitals in Mures and the other eight to the County Emergency Hospital in Bistrita. “The driver of the railcar and another worker who had initially said he does not need medical care, were also taken to the hospital,” said the spokesperson of ISU Bistrita-Nasaud, also pointing out that the initial toll stood at 14. According to the spokesperson, one person is in very serious condition, being taken to the Targu Mures hospital with an intensive care ambulance. The ISU representative also said that ten out of the 16 victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. The head of SMURD Mures (mobile emergency intervention unit), doctor Cristian Boeriu said the man admitted in hospital in serious condition suffered a cranio-facial trauma and he is likely to have a traumatic brain injury. According to the spokesperson of the Bistrita-Nasaud Police, the goods train and the railcar were moving on the same rail, at the entrance in a tunnel close to the Geldin village, the railcar travelling at a higher speed collided into the back of the freight train. In his turn, Ioan Cira, the mayor of the Monor commune, said the accident occurred in a curve with no visibility. Cira claims that after the collision, the train had no problems in continuing its journey, whereas the railcar remained stuck on the railway track. According to the representatives of ISU, all the units of the institution, SMURD and of the County Ambulance Unit were called to the scene of the accident. In addition, the support of ISU Mures was also requested. Due to this accident, the railway traffic was interrupted on the Deda-Dej route.
