Artificial blood created by Cluj research team

A team of scientists of the Chemistry Faculty of the Babes Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca has successfully tested on animals a solution of artificial blood singular in the world. “The product could be used instead of natural blood in emergency transfusions or in surgeries that lead to huge blood losses. Currently, natural blood from donors is used or a liquid that is somehow more viscous, a rare utilisation for a couple of minutes to keep the blood vessels open; yet without oxygen intake essential organs such as the heart, the kidneys and the brain would quickly damage. The novelty our product brings is it carries oxygen as natural blood does, while being perfectly sterile and possible to produce in virtually unlimited quantities as a lab substance,” lecturer Radu Silaghi Dumitrescu, the head of the scientific team that has been working on this project since 2007, told Adevarul daily.
He added that the product should not stay in the body for more than two days as it is not a permanent replacement of blood. “Our target is survival in a state of shock, in a context of surgery. The solution allows the body to function for some hours, for a day until the own natural blood regenerates along with all the other bodily functions,” Dumitrescu explained.
While back in 2007 when they started the research to get a blood substitute the Cluj scientists experimented with recipes loaned from other projects, Dumitrescu today can say without a shadow of a doubt that the solution they found is singular in the world from various points of view, the paper says. “Worldwide, there has been a desideratum for tens of years. People tried to do similar things using animal blood extracts. This is what happened in the US and other parts of the world. There have been various companies trying, even with the help of the US Army, but most of them went bankrupt because clinical tests failed to yield the expected results,” said Dumitrescu.
