Control Body to finalize evaluation of Bechtel ‘robbery’ in February

In February or March 2014, the Prime Minister’s Control Body will finalize “an overall evaluation of the Bechtel robbery,” Dan Sova, Minister of Infrastructure Projects, stated Friday at ‘Atelierele Viitorului’, an event organized by PSD, according to Mediafax. He told participants that EUR 50 million was paid for this project while PSD was the governing party and the rest up to EUR 8.4 billion was the work of “others.” “The contract with Bechtel was concluded when Miron Mitrea was transportation minister and Adrian Nastase was the Prime Minister and it stated very clearly that exactly USD 2.1 billion was to be paid for 464 km of highway. The price for one kilometer of highway was less than USD 5 million. These were PSD’s terms of negotiation. How one kilometer ended up costing EUR 25 million I wouldn’t know; you would have to ask Mr. Dobre, Mr. Ludovic Orban, Mr. Berceanu, and Mrs. Boagiu. They’re the ones you should ask,” Sova stated further. After PSD terminated the contract with Bechtel, the minister continued, only EUR 37 million was paid in damages, not “the billions of euros Mrs. Boagiu was talking about,” and if the contract had not been terminated, the annual bill for work site maintenance alone would have amounted to EUR 64 million.
