Eight injured after two trams collided and derailed in Iasi

Two trams of the local transport company in Iasi collided yesterday and then derailed, after the breaks of one of them failed down a slope, Mediafax reported. The casualty toll ensuing the crash is eight injured, five of whom were carried to the hospital, whereas the other three received medical aid on the spot. “Four (of the casualties – editor’s note) were carried to Sfantul Spiridon Hospital and another at Neurosurgery Hospital. All of them are stable and fully conscious. They will undergo some detailed medical investigations,” said Doctor Diana Cimpoesu, SMURD coordinator for Iasi. The police consider a technical failure suffered by one of the trams. One of the trams’ cabin and the back of the other were severely damaged. Several teams belonging to the local transport company came to the crash site. The tram traffic between the station and the city centre was blocked, and the vehicles were towed and carried to a depot some hundred meters away from the crash site. The Territorial Labour Inspectorate opened an investigation in this case.
