Last European Council of the year kicks off amid protests

EU leaders gathered in Brussels yesterday for the European Council, with Traian Basescu attending the works on behalf of Romania. Earlier, Basescu attended the EPP Summit. The agenda of the Council includes: EU’s common security and defence policy; Economic and Monetary Union, and economic and social policy; Enlargement, migration and energy. Hundreds of protesters have blocked off most traffic around the site of the summit to protest against many of the policies the 28 leaders will discuss during their two-day meeting. Tractors and bales of hay obstructed entry to the main artery leading up to the EU headquarters in Brussels during morning rush hour on Thursday.
