World Arab Language Day marked in Bucharest

Wednesday, the 18th of December, 2013, the Festivities Hall at “Casa Universitarilor” hosted the celebration of the World Arabic Language Day, an event organized by the Arabic Department at the University of Bucharest attended not only by students and professors of the Arabic Department, but also members of the Diplomatic Arab Corps accredited to Bucharest.
The Arabic language was declared one of the official working languages by the United Nations, on the 18th of December, 1973. In 2010, the United Nations celebrated the World Arabic Language Day for the first time, in recognition of its contribution for facilitating the dialogue between different cultures and civilizations.
The festivity started with a short presentation of the signification and importance of the day, made by Prof. George Grigore, Ph.D., and continued with the speech of H.E. Ahmad Aqel, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the State of Palestine and Dean of the Arab Diplomatic Corps in Romania, who highlighted the role of the Arabic language in spreading the Arabic culture and civilization in which the main idea is peace and dialogue. Prof. George Grigore, Ph.D., on behalf of the University of Bucharest – Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures – Arabic Language and Literature Department and Center for Arab Studies offered H.E. Ahmad Aqel a Certificate of Merit in recognition of his remarkable contributions to supporting the activities of the Arabic Language and Literature Department and the Center for Arab Studies by promoting Arab culture in Romania and the intercultural dialogue between Arab countries and Romania.
The Arabic language was celebrated at the University of Bucharest through an artistic program in Arabic as well involving Bachelor and Master students from the department. One of the students interpreted a song by Majida Roumi, on the lyrics of the famous Arab poet, Nizar Qabbani.
The event also included speeches on the importance of the Arabic language from the professors of the Arabic Department: Prof. Laura Sitaru, Ph.D., and Prof. Ovidiu Pietrareanu, Ph.D.
This occasion marked another important event: the launch of the book entitled “Poeme”, a collection of works by the poet Samih al-Qasim, translated into Romanian by George Grigore and Gabriel Bi?un?.  A review of Samih Al-Qasim’s work was presented by Georgiana Nicoarea from the Arabic Language Department. Selections from Samih Al-Qasim’s poems were recited by the students of the Arabic Language Department.
