President Traian Basescu asks the OSCE mission in the Republic of Moldova to intervene to make sure all students have a free choice for Romanian as study language, following the “administrative pressures” put by Tiraspol.
A Presidential Administration release underlines President Traian Basescu’s ‘preoccupation’ after taking note of ‘administrative pressures by the secessionist authorities in the Transdnestrian region on the schools in the Romanian language under the administration of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.’ According to the release, President Basescu believes “the repressive and instigating actions against teachers, parents and children who want to study in Romanian are unacceptable and prove the constant breaching of the human rights in the separatist region.”
“President of Romania Traian Basescu asks the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Republic of Moldova and all the other responsible institutions to intervene to provide access for all students, based on their parents’ option, to freely choose Romanian as study language, even more so considering that it is the state language of the Republic of Moldova,” reads the release.
The Romanian President’s message comes after the account of Lucian Blaga high-school in Tiraspol, where classes are taught in Romanian, was blocked. The announcement was issued on Monday by the institution director, Ion Iovcev, during a meeting at the Ministry of Education, reports Chisinau Daily, in his online issue. The Chisinau government reasserted its criticism against Transdniestr authorities on the situation of the schools where classes are taught in Romanian on the left side of the River Dniester. Minister of Education and the Integration Bureau stressed that these pressures and obstructing access to education by the Tiraspol representatives are unacceptable. During an interview given to radio station Free Europe also on Monday, chief of OSCE mission in R. of Moldova, Jennifer Brush, said that the children’s right to education should prevail amid tensions around the Transdniestr schools.
