Electricity production capacity to increase by close to 20 pc

Romania’s electricity production capacity will increase by approximately 19 per cent in the next six years, as plants producing over 5,000 MW will be brought into service and electrical plants accounting for one quarter of the capacity of new energy groups will be shut down, Mediafax notes. “As new investments generating new electricity production capacity are brought into service, 25 per cent of the existing functional production capacity will be shut down no later than one year after the new energy production capacity has been brought into service,” according to a Government decision.
New projects include one biogas power plant owned by Amonil – a 500 MW pit coal group within Oltenia Energy Complex – a 800 MW pit coal thermal power plant, part of Braila Power Company – a joint venture between E.ON and Enel – and a 200 MW new group pertaining to Hundedoara Energy Complex. Other projects being considered by ELCEN Bucharest and the electric central heating plants (CETs) in Arad, Govora, and Braila are aimed at modernizing existing groups and building new units.
New projects will be partly funded by selling greenhouse gas emission certificates that Romania will receive free of charge between 2013 and 2020 as a result of signing the Kyoto protocol.
Eight production units accounting for 1,235 MW will be shut down in the coming six years – Oltenia Energy Complex (330 MW), Hunedoara Energy Complex (210 MW), CET Brasov (100 MW), ELCEN Bucharest (175 MW), and Termoelectrica (420 MW). The two groups under CET Brasov and one production group of Doicesti (Dambovita) power plant, owned by Termoelectrica, are scheduled to be shut down this year.
CET Grozavesti (owned by ELCEN) and the unit in Deva (owned by Hunedoara Energy Complex) will be shut down in 2017, whereas the units in Turceni (Oltenia Energy Complex) and Bucharest South (ELCEN) will be shut down in 2018. The Borzesti plant (Termoelectrica) is to be shut down in 2019.
