PSD targets 35 pct of votes in European elections

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Prime Minister Victor Ponta declared yesterday, at the beginning of the meeting of the party’s Standing Bureau, that the goal of the Social-Democrats is to garner at least 35% of the votes in the upcoming European elections. ‘If this is even more, I will congratulate you. If it is less, we will look into the reasons for this, but we certainly have this potential. We need to capitalize on it,’ said Ponta, quoted by Agerpres. The PSD leader mentioned that the lists with the PSD candidates, as well as with the alliances the Social-Democrats will enter for these elections, will be completed by January 31, when the meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee is scheduled.
Ponta reiterated that another important goal of PSD is to ‘keep on governing very well,’ stating that figures for 2013 are in the positive realm for European funds, economic growth and foreign investment.’ ‘We must keep USL united and efficient at Government, Parliament, and local structures as well …,’ Ponta cautioned. Also yesterday, PDL president Vasile Blaga announced that the Steering Board of the democrat-liberals will meet the parliamentary groups of the party on February 1st in Brasov, to approve the strategy for the European elections, the campaign team and the legislative priorities. The list of candidates for the European elections will be made public in the second half of February. He added that, during the Brasov meeting, the party will also decide the recommendations for positions of leaders of parliamentary groups in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, after the resignations of Cristian Radulescu and Mircea Toader. Blaga also announced that “the PDL rally in defence of democracy” is scheduled for February 8, in Bucharest. As for the situation of Elena Udrea, he mentioned that the matter was discussed in the BPN meeting held yesterday, but not in reference to expelling her from the party, although there also were some firm positions, but he personally cannot judge her.
