PM Ponta hails German Social Democrat fellows’ confirmation of Schulz candidacy to EC president

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta hailed the German Social Democrats’ confirmation of the European Parliament President Martin Schulz as the future candidate to European Commission president. ‘The PSD (Ponta’s Social Democrat Party – editor’s note) will stand by the side of the PES at the Euro-parliamentary elections in May and it also backs Mr Martin Schulz’s candidacy’, Ponta says in a post on his Facebook, quoted by Agerpres. Schulz has been chosen to top the German Social Democrat Party’s (SPD) list for the elections for the European Parliament due in this May, he got 97.3 percent of the vote of the delegates to the SPD Congress held in Berlin on Sunday. The incumbent European Parliament head is also the candidate of the Party of European Socialists’ (PES) group for European Commission President, a position currently held by Portuguese Jose Manuel Barroso.
