Romania attracted more foreign tourists in 2013

The number of nights spent by foreign tourists in Romanian tourism accommodation establishments grew by 5.1 per cent last year, but the Romanian tourism sector continues lag far behind that of neighboring states, the nights spent by foreign tourists representing less than 20 per cent of total nights spent, Eurostat data shows. Foreign tourists spent 3.5 million nights in Romania last year, this being one of the lowest levels in the EU, over four times lower than the results registered by Hungary or Bulgaria, Mediafax informs. Only Latvia and Lithuania had fewer foreign visitors last year – 2.7 and 2.8 million respectively – however in these states foreign tourists represent 70 and 51 per cent of the market respectively. In Romania foreign tourists represent only 18 per cent of the market, the lowest percentage in the EU, compared to 67 per cent in Bulgaria (with 14.3 million nights spent last year) and 49 per cent in Hungary (with 12.3 million nights).
