Relu Fenechiu – sentenced to five years in prison

A final sentence was ruled yesterday the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) in the ‘Transformer’ case involving Relu Fenechiu (PNL), former Minister of Transport, who was sentenced to five years executory sentence, Agerpres informs. Relu Fenechiu was also forbidden to exercise a series of civil rights within five years after incarceration. The court reiterated its decision regarding the other defendants. Lucian Fenechiu, Relu Fenechiu’s brother, and Mihai Bogdan Damian, administrator of Europlus SRL Iasi, were both sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment. Ioan Turbatu, General Manager of SC Branch Maintenance and Energy Services Electrica Serv -S.A (SISEE) between 2002 and 2004, and Ion Marghidan, General Manager of the same institution between 2004 and 2005, were both convicted to serve six years in prison each for aggravated abuse of office. Petru Andronache, Business Manager of SISEE Moldova between 2002 and 2005, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and prohibited from exercising several of his rights for five years for aggravated abuse of office. The court also ordered the six defendants to pay over RON 5.7 million combined in material damages to SISEE Moldova. The sentence is final and the six defendants will be incarcerated.
Shortly after the sentence was made public, Cristina Pocora, spokeswoman for PNL, stated it was “a great loss” for PNL, and underlined the Liberals hope Fenechiu will “overcome this trial” and remain faithful to the party.
Relu Fenechiu was sued by the prosecutors at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in June 2012, in connection with a case now known as the ‘Transformer,’ and he was charged for allegedly selling used transformers and switches for the same price as new products to SISEE Moldova, in collaboration with members of the former management.
One year later, the Supreme Court sentenced Fenechiu, then Minister of Transport, to five years’ imprisonment and prohibited him from exercising several rights for three years, for complicity in aggravated abuse of office. Following the court’s sentence to imprisonment, he resigned from the position of Minister of Transport..
