CSCI poll: Over 50 pct of Romanians would vote for Ponta in the runoff

More than half of Romanian voters would vote for the national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Ponta if Ponta made it to the second round of this year’s presidential election, irrespective of alternatives, show findings of a CSCI poll released on Thursday and quoted by Agerpres.
If the first round of the presidential election were held next Sunday and the ruling Social Liberal Union (USL) endorsed a joint candidate, the options of the Romanian voters would be as follows: 32 per cent for Crin Antonescu of USL, 26 per cent for Mugur Isarescu (independent), 19 per cent for Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu (on behalf of the opposition Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and extra-parliamentary People’s Movement Party (PMP). On the other hand, if PSD and the National Liberal Party (PNL), the major partners in the ruling USL, did not endorse a joint candidate, the intentions would be 33 per cent for Victor Ponta (PSD), 22 per cent for Crin Antonescu (PNL), 20 per cent for Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu (PMP)
If things led to a second ballot, Ponta would be the main favourite, no matter the alternatives. Thus, running against Catalin Predoiu, Ponta would garner 75 per cent of the vote.
