Romania defeats Hungary 2-1 in Fed Cup’s Group B

Romania’s Fed Cup team defeated Hungary on Wednesday in Budapest, 2-1, in the first stage of Group B games, part of the first division of the Euro-African Zone, the competition’s official website informs.
In the first game, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (26th WTA) (photo) defeated Reka-Luca Jani (253rd WTA), 6-1, 6-0. In the second game, Romania’s Simona Halep (10th WTA) was defeated by Timea Babos (83rd WTA), 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the doubles game, Romania’s Monica Niculescu and Irina-Camelia Begu defeated Hungary’s Timea Babos and Reka-Luca Jani, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-0.
In the other Group B game, Great Britain is leading Latvia 2-0 ahead of the doubles game. Romania will next play against Great Britain on Friday and against Latvia on Saturday. In order to qualify for the playoff of the world’s second group the team coached by Alina Tecsor has to win Group B and defeat the winner of Group C or Group D.
