Feature film ‘La Grande Bellezza’ opens BIFF

The 10th edition of the Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF) will open with La Grande Bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino, a feature film nominated for the 2014 Oscars. The opening ceremony will unfold between March 26 and April 2. According to a press release cited by Mediafax, the BIFF films will be showcased at Studio Cinema, in the Horia Bernea Hall of Noul Cinematograf al Regizorului Roman (the Romanian Peasant Museum), and the Cervantes Hall of the Cervantes Institute. This year, B-EST IFF has changed into BIFF.
Jep Gambardella (played by Toni Servillo), a handsome yet aging man, enjoys the city’s social scene to the fullest. He is invited to sophisticated dinners and is the life of every party. A successful journalist and chronic seducer, Jep is the author of a book that earned him a literary prize when he was younger and the fame of frustrated writer. He now hides his disappointment beneath a constantly cynical attitude and bitterly lucid view of the world.
With the world premiere at Cannes 2013, Sorrentino’s film has won 20 awards, including the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film, and Best Montage awards of the European Film Academy, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. La Grande Bellezza will be distributed in Romanian theaters by Independenta Film starting March 28.
Similar to other European festivals, in addition to traditional sections like ‘Competition,’ ‘Panorama,’ and ‘Children’s Movies,’ BIFF will inaugurate several new festival sections this year – ‘Focus (Chile in 2014)’ and ‘Giornate Degli Autori (Venice Days).’ Other novelty components of this year’s edition include anniversary film projections marking significant historical events such as 100 years since the outbreak of World War I and 125 years since Charlie Chaplin was born. A documentary film section will also be launched, entitled ‘Film in Film,’ which will showcase the BIFF’s surprise film.
Under the patronage of Prince Radu of Romania, the 10th edition of BIFF is sponsored by the National Center of Cinematography (CNC).
