PM Ponta does not give up: fuel tax in effect as of April

PM Victor Ponta announced he talked on the phone last week with President Traian Basescu and the Head of State told him he still does not want to sign the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) so that this agreement is not operational in effect but that Romania will fulfil its commitments. He said again that the fuel excise tax of 7 Eurocents will be applied to fuel as of April. President Traian Basescu said on Monday that he expects from the Government “the draft agreement with the IMF” to discuss it. Basescu had said upon meeting the IMF delegation that he will not support the fuel tax, adding that he will not block the Government-IMF decision this time, but that he should not be asked to sign these negotiations.
