The Cat Empire first to confirm presence at B’ESTFEST Summer Camp 2014

The first band to confirm presence in the B’ESTFEST Summer Camp programme is The Cat Empire, the Australian ska-jazz band which turned into one of the most common presences of their genre at international music festivals. The Cat Empire opens the list of artists present at the first edition of B’ESTFEST to be held on Mogosoaia Palace estate, scheduled this summer on July 31, August 1 and 2, according to a press release.
The Cat Empire came into existence in Australia in 1999 and consists of Ollie McGill (keyboards, backing vocals), Ryan Monro (bass and backing vocals), Felix Riebl (percussion, vocal), Harry James Angus (trumpet, vocal), Will Hull-Brown (drums) and Jamshid “Jumps” Khadiwhala (turntables, percussion). Their music was described as an original mixture of jazz, funk and rock with strong latino, reggae, ska and dub influences, the band being famous for their militant attitude in breaking musical, geographical and linguistic barriers.
After a few appearances at famous festivals such as Melbourne Festival and Edinburgh Festival, the Australians released their debut album “The Cat Empire” in 2001. The second album “Two Shoes” (2005) peaked the charts on top position, and Allmusic magazine described it as a “remarkable clever” mixture of alt-rock, hip-hop, reggae, ska and latin jazz. At the end of 2005, “Two Shoes” had already gained platinum, whereas “The Cat Empire” already had two. In the following years, the band released other two albums “Cities: The Cat Empire Project” (2006) and “So Many Nights” (2007) and got the award for the Best Album (ARIA Music Awards), went into a world tour including Asia, America and Europe, as well as an appearance at Glastonbury festival. “Cinema” album was launched in 2010 and marked another stage in the band evolution. If The Cat Empire had tested any style by that time, from reggae to salsa, from jazz to hip-hop, “Cinema” brought the band a new voice, unique and personal, provided by the sum of all musical experiences they had went through. “Steal the Light,” the latest album of the Australians, was launched in 2013.
Famous for their energetic shows where improvisation is common, the Australians of The Cat Empire have performed in more than 800 concerts and appearances in the line-ups of such festivals as Summersonic (Japan), Rock am Ring (Germany), V Festival (UK), Bonnaroo (US) or Montreal Jazz Festival. This year, The Cat Empire will come to Bucharest for the first time at B’ESTFEST Summer Camp.
