Moldovan deputy Valeriu Guma, sentenced to four years of prison in Romania for corruption, announced yesterday he relinquishes his mandate in the Parliament of Chisinau and he resigns from the Democratic Party, reports Mediafax, quoting the online edition of the Journal of Chisinau. “This is a political decision. I do not want my family to be the target of dirty political attacks,” said Valeriu Guma. The Moldovan politician claims his file was a setup and that he holds evidence for his innocence. He said he appealed the rule of the court at the European Court for Human Rights. The High Court of Cassation and Justice sentenced Valeriu Guma to four years of prison on April 17, 2013. The Moldovan deputy was sued in 2008 under the accusation that he bribed the general director of the Legal Department of the Authority for State Assets Recovery (AVAS) to persuade the officials to approve a convention meant to keep in effect a privatization contract at a company where he was shareholder.
