Klaus Iohannis: Negotiations within USL failed

PNL leadership is going to ascertain today that there is no way to go on with ‘this form of non-existent collaboration’.

Liberal First VP Klaus Iohannis told a press conference last night that the negotiations inside USL failed and the Permanent Delegation (BPN) of the party will decide today over the next steps the party will take. Liberal’s president Crin Antonescu warned over the weekend that if the PNL’s conditions for the Cabinet reshuffle are not met, the Liberal ministers will resign from Ponta Government.
“BPN decided to operate a few changes, namely to replace in early February four ministers at Home Affairs, Health, Finances and Economy ministries. Now we find ourselves at the end of the month and things did not advance at all.  PNL asked for the exact same offices that we had previously with a minor change. And here we are three weeks later and the reshuffle did not take place’, Iohannis said. He revealed that there were several rounds of negotiations and many discussions but a standstill had been reached last weekend.
‘Today we have to draw the conclusion that the negotiations for the Government reshuffle failed”, the Liberal VP said. Asked by a journalist what is going to happen tomorrow, Iohannis said: “Most likely, the Permanent Delegation will ascertain the same thing: the negotiations failed and that we can not go on with this non-existent collaboration. And then, the first next step for us will be to withdraw our ministers from the Cabinet”. Iohannis said that this decision would not be reversible.
Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman Victor Ponta on Monday voiced his hope that Liberals “are not sacrificing” the project of the Social Liberal Union (USL, the ruling alliance made up of PSD, the National Liberal Party – PNL, the Conservative Party – PC, and the National Union for Romania’s Progress) in favour of a ‘personal project’ of PNL leader Crin Antonescu.
