Romania’s agri-food trade running EUR 4.65 bln surplus at end-November

Romania’s agri-food trade was running a surplus of EUR 301.1 M over the first 11 months of 2013, compared to a deficit of EUR 650 M euros in the same period of 2012. The sector’s trade balance will definitely end 2013 in the positive, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development Daniel Botanoiu said in interview with AGERPRES. For the first time in 20 years, Romania runs a surplus in agri-food trade, with a plus of 182 million euro at the end of October 2013.
Data presented by the official of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) reveal that between January 1 – November 30, 2013, Romania’s agri-food exports totaled EUR 4.658 bln by EUR 1.043 bln more than in the same period of 2012, which represents an advance of 28.9 per cent, while imports, amounting to EUR 4.357 bln , increased by only 2.2 per cent compared to the same period of 2012. On a y-o-y basis, agri-food exports to non-EU countries increased by 75.4 per cent and intra-Community shipments advanced 8.6 per cent.
Topping the list of exported products by their share in value are wheat, maize, sunflower seeds and cigarettes, with an aggregate contribution of 53.5 percent of receipts. Compared to the same period of 2012, additional revenues were collected for most groups of exported food products and mainly for wheat (EUR + 425.3M), sunflower seeds (EUR + 169M), rapeseed (EUR + 147.9M), maize (EUR + 81.1M) and barley (EUR + 70.7M) .
On the other hand, Romania’s food imports between January 1 – November 30 2013 consisted mainly of pork, sugar and soybean meal, bakery and pastry products, and prepared foods.
