ANM chief, sacked over flu vaccine row

Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu removed from office Wednesday, just before submitting his resignation, the president of the National Medicine Agency (ANM) Marius Savu for “lack of responsibility and professionalism in managing the situation of the flu vaccine,” because he used a non-conform method of testing the vaccine.
According to medical experts, the testing method of the vaccine against influenza used by a French laboratory, to which the president of ANM resorted from his own initiative, was the chromagenic method that is not conform to the provision of the European pharmacopeia (the gel-clot method) for this type of product, MS explained. Nicolaescu also accused that this row raised new accusations against the liberals, as the premier warned him, since the production of the vaccine has resumed that nothing will be obtained from the Cantacuzino Institute. The former minister nonetheless says that the non-conform vaccine should be blamed on the incompetence of ANM, rather than ill-will. In retort, ANM spokeswoman Anca Crupariu said that the re-testing of the flu vaccine conducted both in the laboratory of ANM and at the Cantacuzino Institute proved the product to be non-conform because of the bacterial endotoxin parameter.
