ArcelorMittal: After deregulation, gas price in Romania to be higher than in EU

The price of natural gas on the Romanian market will be aligned to the import one at the end of the deregulation period, but the price against which Romania is importing gas is higher than that on the European markets, the general manager of ArcelorMittal Galati, Bruno Ribo told in a press conference recently. According to him, other European markets had developed alternative import sources before deregulating their gas market. ‘Two years for market deregulation for industrial consumers is not enough. A deregulation period of six years was given for household ones,’ he added. Asked whether, in his opinion, industry should have received also a six-year period for deregulation, Ribo answered affirmatively. ‘The energy and gas prices lead to a decrease in competitiveness. Even with energy-efficiency investments, the impact cannot be cancelled. Solutions exist and are implemented legally in most EU countries, and the components of the energy-related costs should be applied to everyone. The authorities’ support is required for that. Tomorrow it will be too late,’ said the ArcelorMittal official.
The gas market in Romania is not ready for deregulating the segment of industrial consumers this summer, because there is neither a gas exchange nor market mechanisms to form the price, said Eric Stab, the general manager of GDF Suez Energy Romania, the former Distrigaz Sud.
‘’For household consumers, this year’s price increases will be modest, we are concerned about the industrial consumer segment, where authorities want to complete deregulation by six months earlier than the calendar agreed with the IMF, on June 30, 2014, compared to December 31, 2014, respectively,” Stab said.
According to Eric Stab, this will affect approximately 170,000 gas consumers, who, as of July 1, will no longer pay regulated prices, and will have to buy gas from the competitive market.
