Romania has to absorb EUR 2.8 bn from European funds this year in order to avoid EC disengagement of sums, Premier Victor Ponta stated during the government meeting, asking the ministers to make sure there will be no problems in the management authorities’ activity for operational programs. The latest letter of intent agreed with the International Monetary Fund shows that “sustained efforts” are needed in order to ease the disengagement risk in 2015, because the funds that are at risk in 2014 total EUR 2.8 bn, a value that is smaller than the expenditures forecast for this year. According to Eugen Teodorovici, the Minister for European Funds, the reimbursement requests filed by Romania last year totaled EUR 3.5 bn, and the European Commission reimbursed approximately EUR 2.88 bn. At the same time, Romania has to eligibly spend approximately EUR 2.8 bn in 2014.
