Romania-Azerbaijan: High level of political relations, good economic prospects

On 17 March 2014, during the visit paid by the Inter-parliamentary group of friendship Azerbaijan-Romania to Bucharest, a meeting took place between the members of the Parliaments of Azerbaijan and Romania. The working meeting was held following an invitation launched by the Romanian side.

The president of the Group of Friendship Romania-Azerbaijan, Mr. Iulian Iancu, spoke about political relations at high level between the two countries and emphasised the importance of the Strategic Partnership signed by the two countries in 2007. It was also mentioned the fact that the high level of political relations creates opportunities for economic development. I. Iancu reminded that many companies from Romania are active now on the market of Azerbaijan, the main fields of activity being IT and the manufacturing of oil equipment.

There were also talks about the importance of cultural relations between the two countries and the role of the Representation of the “Heydar Aliyev” Foundation in Romania, in view of achieving several projects in the cultural, educational and humanitarian sectors. As a future step for strengthening these relations, it was proposed to inaugurate the first Representation of the Romanian Cultural Institute of the Caspian region in Azerbaijan.

The president of the Group also mentioned the interest and openness of Romania for the foreign investments in infrastructure and for renewing energy production capacities. There were also talks about investment opportunities in Constanta Port and the professional activity of the Representation of the national oil company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) in Romania.

In his turn, the president of the Group of Friendship Azerbaijan-Romania, Mr. Azay Quliyev spoke about the important role of the two Groups in strengthening the bilateral relations in the cultural area and in energy. It was mentioned the constant support provided by Romania to Azerbaijan in the international organisations for solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in line with the principles of international law and territorial integrity.

The same day, the headquarters of the European Foundation Titulescu hosted the conference “Azerbaijan – geopolitics and energy strategies in Southern Caucasus.” The event was attended by members of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan, representatives of the “Heydar Aliyev” Foundation and of the national oil company (SOCAR) in Romania, along with personalities of the political and economic life in Romania. On the agenda of the event were talks about the importance of Azerbaijan in the Southern Caucasus region and the strategic role of Azerbaijan as an alternative route for the energy security of Europe, as well as the position of the Republic of Azerbaijan in relation to the recent political changes that took place across the region.

At the end of the day and of the rounds of talks, the representation of SOCAR Romania held a dinner on the occasion of the Azeri holiday Novruz.
