MEP Elena Basescu, the youngest daughter of President Traian Basescu, officially announced yesterday her resignation from PDL and her decision to join the Popular Movement Party (PMP). The announcement concerning the resignation from PDL was made through a press communiqué, while the decision to join the PMP was discussed by PMP President Eugen Tomac himself during a press conference he attended alongside Elena Udrea and Elena Basescu. The Head of State’s youngest daughter stated that she “easily” gathered the 100,000 signatures needed to run as an independent candidate in the EP elections, but pointed out she will not run “because I don’t want to take one, two or three percentage points away from PMP’s score.” “I want this project that my father launched to succeed in nominating the Premier in 2016,” Elena Basescu said, being quoted by Mediafax. “I express my hope that all those that offered their signatures to me will give their votes to PMP and not to other parties, especially not to PDL which has on its eligible positions persons that are way beyond the age of retirement,” the EP said. According to Democrat-Liberal sources, the members of PDL’s leadership found out yesterday about Elena Basescu’s resignation, through SMS, during the weekly meeting of the party’s Permanent National Bureau (BPN). After the announcement concerning Elena Basescu’s resignation from PDL, MEP Theodor Stolojan, who was formerly close to the Basescu family, stated that he is very sorry that both the president’s daughter and Cristian Preda left the party “that did so much for them.” Nevertheless, Stolojan emphasized that during their five-year terms the two did not stand out through any important activity within the EP: “In five years’ time she (Elena Basescu) was never an EP rapporteur and Mr. Cristian Preda was only once an EP rapporteur for a report, out of his own initiative. (…) There is no activity more important (than that of rapporteur), one has to distinguish it from Parliamentary activism, activism that is reflected through all kinds of statements, all kinds of speeches that have nothing to do with the activity of rapporteur of the EP or of the Commission” .
