Romania will participate for the first time, in late May, with a national stand, in the New York Book Fair, the Romanian Cultural Institute’s (ICR) President Lilian Zamfiroiu announced on Sunday evening, in Paris.
Zamfiroiu mentioned that the programme of the event, which will be organized by ICR, ‘is not established yet, but it is being done these days together with ICR Representation Office in New York’. ‘We have the advantage that the director of our representation office in New York is a former very successful publisher in Romania, Doina Uricariu, and its deputy director, who will join the team on April 3, is Mircea Suciu. I have every reason to believe that the first Romanian presence in the book fair there will be a success,’ said Zamfiroiu. Also this year, Romania will be present in the book fairs in London and Turin.
Romania participated, March 21 to 24, in the 34th edition of Salon du Livre, the most important publishing event in France, with a stand organized by the ICR. Zamfiroiu said Romania’s presence in Salon du Livre was a success, stressing Romanian literature has gained more visibility on the French literary market after this event. George Arion, Dinu Flamand, Nicolae Manolescu, George Banu and Matei Visniec were among the 50 Romanian authors who took part in the Paris Fair, Romanian stand having “Books of the future, future of the books” theme. According to Zamfiroiu, the main gains reside in a good image for Romania, as meetings were fixed with the main French publishing houses to contract some translations from the Romanian literature.
