Codrut Seres, sentenced to 4 years in ‘Hidroelectrica’ file

The former minister of Economy, Codrut Seres was sentenced yesterday to 4 years in prison, without parole, for complicity to misuse of authority, in the “Hidroelectrica” file, but the decision may be appealed.
The 3-judge panel of the Supreme Court acquitted Seres of the charge of forming an organised criminal group, but sent him to prison for 4 years and prohibited him from holding public offices during a 2-year interval, for complicity to misuse of authority in qualified form.
The ex-minister of Economy, Codrut Seres was sent in court by DIICOT in September 2011, for hiding the illegal activities of the management of SC Hidroelectrica SA, which caused a loss of approximately USD 165 M. Initially, DIICOT charged Seres with plotting and undermining the national economy, but the accusation was later changed into forming an organised criminal group and misuse of authority.
