Petrom Bucharest International Half Marathon, Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest International Marathon and DHL-Carpathians Relay Race Marathon are ready to kick off.
More than 10,000 runners in more than 50 states all over the world are expected this year in Bucharest to kick off in the third edition of Petrom Bucharest International Half Marathon on May 17 and 18 and at the seventh edition of Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest International Marathon in October 4 and 5, said yesterday Valeria Racila Van Groningen, president of Bucharest Running Club Association, the organizer of the events, during a press conference.
Present at the event, Minister of Youth and Sports Gabriela Szabo announced that she, together with PM Victor Ponta, vice-PM Gabriel Oprea and Ministers Attila Korodi, Titus Corlatean, Nicolae Banicioiu and Dan Sova will create two teams and will participate in the semi-marathon on May 18. Bucharest vice-mayor Marcel Nicolaescu said he will participate in the marathon in May along with a team of the mayoralty, challenging the Government relay race.
Olympic rowing champion Valeria Racila Van Groningen said: “Compared to the first edition, we have 95 percent increase in participation at the half-marathon, 250 percent at 10 km, and 290 percent at the relay race. We have more and more runners since 2008 when we started, there have been more and more people.”
There will be also a race for kids at Petrom Bucharest International Half Marathon on May 17, where about 2,000 runners are expected, aged over 6. During Petrom Bucharest International Half Marathon, member of the International Association of Marathons and Long-Distance Races, there will be half-marathons, a 10 km individual race, a relay race of 4×5 km and the popular race of 2.9 km, starting from the Palace of Parliament.
The marathon DHL Carpati Relay Race is a sounding name for any runner, either amateur or professional. This year on June 21, 2014, after a rather large break, the fifth edition of this sportive event will take place, as 2009 is the first year when it was not held. For the marathon in June, the representatives of the logistics and courier services company DHL Romania prepared a route stretching over 40 km starting from Predeal to Poiana Brasov.
According to DHL Romania managing director Daniel Kearvell, the community created around the DHL marathon the Carpathians Relay Race exceeds 2,000 people. He said on Wednesday during a press conference that the event is both for the public and the business milieu, as the companies are invited to participate either with their own teams or sponsoring other teams. The participation is possible after paying a registration tax between RON 90 and 115, the payment being made directly to the account of the Association Save the Children, for a financial support for the program “Education for health.” Over the four editions, 60,000 EUR were collected from the participation in this event and donated to an NGO for kids in distress or facing difficulties.
