Need to increase number of U.S. and NATO troops, on the agenda of Aurescu – Nuland meeting

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Bogdan Aurescu met with U.S. Secretary of State Victoria Nuland to discuss the need to increase the number of U.S. and NATO troops in those ally states at the eastern frontier of the Alliance, including Romania, the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry informed Thursday.
The meeting took place in Washington and is part the visit undertaken by Bogdan Aurescu, Secretary of State on Strategic Affairs for the Ministry of Defense purposes, to the United States of America this week. In the context of discussions about the latest developments in neighboring western countries, Bogdan Aurescu “argued in favor of increasing the number of U.S.A. (and NATO) troops in those ally states at the eastern frontier of the Alliance, including Romania,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.
The officials also talked about the future development of the bilateral Taskforce aimed at implementing the Joint Strategic Partnership Declaration. In addition, the Romanian Secretary of State expressed hope that a new U.S. ambassador to Bucharest would be appointed as soon as possible, according to the cited source.
Bogdan Aurescu also met with Chris Murphy, Chair of the Subcommittee on Europe, Ron Johnson, member of the Subcommittee on Europe with the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Tom Marino, Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Risks, and Mike Rogers, Chair of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces within the House of Representatives. In his discussion with the American congressmen, the Secretary of State brought up the objective of including Romania in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) as soon as possible.
In an interview with the France-Pressse news agency, quoted by Hotnews, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean has also called for relocation of troops in “the maritime, air and land space”. “The Black Sea space has to be a top priority for NATO and the EU,” Corlatean said.
